Handouts meant eight hundred calories of food a day and survival. When Franz was a pilot, he had been well fed. But after the war, Franz had forgotten the feeling of being full. #4 After the war, Franz was released by the Americans because of his clean record. He wanted to work, but the Americans had no use for him because he had not been a member of the Nazi Party. The Americans instead labeled him a Nazi, which caused him to be harassed by other workers.
